Powder Room
THE
CLIENTS: A very active middle-aged couple. She is practical and
likes clean-lined design. He's a romantic and prefers a lot of design
detail.
THE SPACE: A main level guest bath with no windows.
It was losing its tub-shower during the remodeling of the adjacent
Master Bath. The revised space measures 36" x 81" with 8' ceilings.
THE CHALLANGE: Redesign the new smaller room to please
both partners' tastes and provide a definite WOW factor.
THE SOLUTION: The layout of the room was determined
by its reduced size. We centered the toilet on the short wall to
take advantage of the existing plumbing. The vanity went on the
facing wall. A pocket door was our solution to keep the powder room
and its narrow adjacent hall as open as possible. The husband fell
in love with a scalloped Honey-colored vessel sink. Our goal became
finding materials that would complement the sink but not overwhelm
the room and the wife. We found an antique-finished Gold Pearl limestone
to use as a countertop. Matching Gold Pearl tiles provided visual
continuity on the floor and as a wainscot. Then, we discovered some
tiny onyx mosaics and molding pieces that matched the sink exactly.
We used these as accents in the floor and wainscot and to frame
a full-height beveled mirror behind the sink. The huge mirror makes
the room look much larger as does the use of a wall-hung vanity
with soft lights below. We kept the room very monochromatic and
chose cabinets in a simple style in a soft striated finish. Storage
was provided with a full-width cabinet over the toilet. Our goal
was to please both partners. He loved the onyx, she loved the clean
lines. We were happy to have pleased them both. Back to other rooms...
